EXIT
Exhibition Design
Spring 2022

Spring of 2022 marked an inspiring juncture, where a close-knit cohort of 16 individuals, myself included, embarked on a mission to shape the identity of the design senior graduate exhibition at San Francisco State University. Amid these 16 different projects, my proposal was not only embraced but brought to life.

Baptized as "EXIT", the exhibition reverberates with the triumphant echoes of the 2022 design graduates, a chapter that I'm proud to have shared. It stands as a tribute to the bittersweet moment when graduates, pass beneath the exit sign for the last time, bidding adieu to cherished memories. Here, we commemorate the gamut of college experiences – heartaches, virtual learning struggles, transformative mentors, both unforgettable and fade-away peers, and enduring friendships. Above all, "EXIT" heralds the realization that graduation means taking the hard-won skills into the professional design arena.

In the realm of design, graduates are perpetual works-in-progress, a fact they've come to embrace over their four-year journey. The industry beckons, and as key players, they step forward, recognizing that the beauty lies not in the finish, but in the perpetual evolution they now spearhead.

Analog Approaches

A major driving force behind the final result sprang from the conceptual thinking fostered by the professors at SFSU. Their curriculum laid the groundwork for a fresh perspective, setting the stage for what was to come.

I was drawn to a mixed-media approach. The fusion of analog brush pen strokes with digital imagery became a cornerstone, mirroring the very essence of a graduate's journey – that ongoing pursuit of mastery between the conceptual and visual.

I also found resonance in an unlikely source: duct tape. Just like the transition from student to graduate, duct tape binds and mends, handling the seemingly unfixable with finesse. It's a visual nod to our expertise as design students – adept not only at crafting, but also at mending the fractures that come our way.

Line Boil

After drawing + tracing multiple times + scanning + vectorizing + animating, you get this line boil effect, and I thought it was perfect in order to furtherly convey that sense of mixed media I wanted. Line boil effects are usually used on digital illustrative designs that needs a little more cartoon-esque life.
